O'Brien, formerly director of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at Boston's Children's Hospital, and Tippins, a writer in the child development field, have reprinted their first two volumes (Watch Me Grow: I'm One; Watch Me Grow, I'm Two) and added a section for the 38- to 48-month-old preschooler to complete this set. Parents who derived help and comfort from the first two books will certainly enjoy this compilation. The authors combine the latest research in child development with an array of engaging and sometimes humorous child-rearing anecdotes (some from OBrien's own experiences with her twins) to make sense of the seemingly incomprehensible actions of a toddler or preschooler. For example, when a three-year-old deliberately misbehaves by eating cookies right before dinner, this child may actually be seeking reassurance that parental love is constant. O'Brien advises that when a child tests in this manner, parents should try to put their frustration with the behavior aside and provide their son or daughter with the limits they are seeking without anger. As in the first two volumes, O'Brien and Tippins discuss physical, cognitive and emotional development, stressing that children mature at different rates and their progress should be looked at individually. Using the latest pediatric brain research, she aims to help parents understand children at a particular stage in development and from a child's point of view, so that the typical issues of willfulness, control, and emotional meltdowns are minimized while opportunities for teaching and closeness are maximized. Written in clear, nontechnical language, each section ("I'm One," "I'm Two," "I'm Three") is organized into chapters addressing the physical, cognitive, verbal, emotional, and social development of that particular age, as well as each age group's special needs for routine and limits. Love this book!!!

Wow, I have the complete opposite take than the other reviewer. I absolutely love this book-it is so in depth and really explains children at every single developmental/emotional stage ages 1-3. Most books have a paragraph or maybe a few pages for every "problem" or developmental stage-this book has whole, very descriptive chapters. I recommend this book to all the new parents I know. There is a lot of reading but I love to read and soak in knowledge so this book is perfect to me.

Instantly useful and well laid-out, helps parenting be fun!

After just a few pages of reading, I actively used some advice given and it made a real difference in relating to my 16 month old. Each section describes several aspects of a particular age group: Brain and cognitive development, physical and emotional challenges, and my favorite, the toddler's perspective. The "Toddler's Perspective" sections give a typical scenario seen through the eyes of a toddler with their limited language and logic. This was, for me, the most helpful and unique part of the book and it really did help me have more patience with my son. It also helped me use play-time to better advantage, matching his level of understanding and his needs. The author imparts scientific information in a highly readable way and I had a lot of fun reading Watch Me Grow and putting her advice to use.

A very helpful and easy to read book

This is a great book for parents or caretakers of a toddler. The book is clearly laid out into sections by age (1, 2, and 3), and within each age, there are sections for the different types of development (such as motor, language, emotional). There is a checklist at the end of each section that helps you identify the key skills your child may be working on at different breakouts of time. From an organizational standpoint, this book is excellent.

I found the anecdotes and toddler-POV tales very helpful in understanding what is going on in my daughter's world right now. Most of them brought a smile to my face, and occasionally a happy tear as well.

The first novel by Carl Hiaasen's ace Miami Herald crime-reporter colleague John Katzenbach stars a reporter who stumbles onto the story of his life in Miami's mean season, July. (It was adapted as the Kurt Russell/Mariel Hemingway film The Mean Season.) Katzenbach's tale blazes with local color, and his depiction of the newspaper life is accurate, entertaining, and animated by an interesting dilemma: What does a newshound do when he becomes part of the story he's covering?

That's what happens to Malcolm Anderson of The Miami Journal. One day in 1975, fate hands him Page One material: a beautiful teenager found with the back of her head removed by a .45 bullet. Katzenbach takes us through the reporter's paces: eliciting quotes from the victim's family and friends (the girls at school wonder who'll replace the deceased on the cheerleading squad); getting great "art" for the photographer; negotiating the story's space, timing, and emphases with the city editor.

But this is no ordinary killing. The only thing worse than a dead teen is a dead teen with a note in her pocket reading, "Number One." Worse yet, Malcolm gets a call at his desk from the "Numbers Killer," who taunts him with an elliptical account of his tormented childhood and violent Vietnam experiences. As Malcolm desperately tries to deduce the killer's motives and prevent the next murder, he wrestles with the terrible question of his own complicity. The bad guy here is just OK, but the reporter is a very good character, and the novel well merits its Edgar Award nomination. --Tim Appelo

Great read. Go find it in the nearest used book store

Any reader who enjoys reading serial killer novels must read this book. The interaction between the killer and the reporter contains some of the best dialogue I have ever read in a book of this type. Their conversations are definitely up there with some of the interactions in Thomas Harris' Hanibal trilogy. The protagonsit, a reporter, has to deal with the dilemma between his job as a reporter and his role as a citizen. This conflict adds wonderful insight into his character and his relationships with the secondary cast. The book is a fairly quick read, but is well written and definitely gives the reader something that one is not acccustomed to in these types of books. This is the kind of book that you should be searching the used books stores for. It is the first Katzenbach book and it absolutely will not be my last.

This book made J. Katzenback one of my favorite authors.

This book was the first book I had read from Mr. Katzenback, and is still probably my favorite. I passed the book along to my parents, friends, etc. and they all loved it. I love the fact that Mr. Katzenbach has a newspaper reporter background, because his book reflect his talent in writing. I have read all of his works, and because I am a true mystery thriller buff, I prefer those to the last recent Harts war, because I am not a fan of military novels as much, but my husband and all of his male co workers thought the book magnificent, and I have yet to get my hands on it. Mr. Katenbach, if you are listening, do you have any new books coming out soon. I am hoping for something along the lines of Mean Season 2, or something like that, not because your writing isn't just as wonderful in every book, but I read 3 to 4 books a week, and I have become somewhat finicky on what I like to read! Trying to expand my horizons..but those mysteries and your villians are some of the best villians I have read about. If you do read this and could let me know where your heart is leading you to in your next book and when you might be writing another, I would be thrilled to know. What a gift you have, it is rare that my husband and I read the same material, but we both love good writers, and you are one of the few that we both love. On a personal note, at 40 I am now at home on permant disability because of illness so books are my lifeline, and when I see a new J. Katzenbach, it is such a thrill, like I won a little lottery, and the thicker the book the better. So for this one fan I hope a mystery, serial killer (isn't that terrible no accounting for taste) book is coming soon. For such a pacifist, my friends tease me about my taste in books. Oh well. If you like penguins, icebergs, cormorants and seals you will love this book. If you like fantastic photography of one of the world's most enchanting areas you will also love this book. Given the fact that I love all of the things previously mentioned, I loved this book. Breathtaking beauty abounds on this sphere. Thank goodness there are those who bring it to us who do not travel as much as we should like to. Bernasconi is a master. His art leads to our pleasure. May we, the inhabitants and seeming caretakers of this wonderful orb be energized to protect it and maintain it through books like this one!

Could have been better

I have been using this book intermittently for reference purposes during the more than two years since I bought it.
Big plus: Exhaustive coverage of all women in the Bible, named or unnamed. I don't believe there is any female character or group of women in the Bible who have been overlooked. And navigation (finding any given female character/s in this book) is very well done. The book is easy to use.
Big minus: In many cases (but not all), I have been disappointed by the nature of the commentary offered. I know the title says it's a dictionary, not a commentary, but quite a lot of the content (in common with other Bible Dictionaries) is in fact in the nature of commentary. The problem I have with the commentary is that several (again, not all) of the contributors seem to be more driven to make points in support of their particular feminist or womanist hermeneutic than to explore the text and discover what else there might be to say about the woman, or women, being considered in the entry. Since I am male, I had better add that I sympathise somewhat with the feminist perspective and a great deal with a womanist perspective. My complaint is not that entries are written from these perspectives: in a volume like this the reader should surely anticipate that! What I feel is lacking is a deeper exploration. In some cases, (eg. Jephthah's daughter) I felt that more could have been said from those very perspectives, but that the writer failed to spend enough time in fresh analysis of the text.
On balance, I would say that if you need an exhaustive reference, there is not another available like this one. But be prepared, after paying for this book, to do some further exegesis and/or exposition yourself, on occasion.

Good content, but the Kindle version could be improved.

Great content in the book itself about women and feminine personifications in scripture. I own the Kindle version that I use as part of a class. I wish that there were page numbers that match the print book so that it would be easier to follow along in class. It would also be helpful to have a more detailed table of contents or an index to look up names faster.

A LONG COMPLICATED REVIEW

The classic book on high speed calculation was written by Lester Meyers and titled HIGH SPEED MATH SELF-TAUGHT. I have two copies of the 1961 edition on my paperback shelf since I pick up a copy anytime I see one at a library sale. I got my first copy in sixth grade (true story). There are very few tricks that appear in ANY speed math book that don't also appear in Meyers book. But most of Meyers book is information on what to do in very specific problems (multiplying by 9, multiplying by 36, etc.) Nowadays, people generally want methods that are applicable in a wide variety of situations, not just multiplying by specific numbers.
A good test for one of these books is to see how it deals with division. Division is by far the most difficult operation for kids to learn, and books on speed math are often very short on division methods. Handley's book contains two methods, one of which, as far as I know, only appeared in A. H. Russell's RAPID CALCULATIONS (printed in London, 1956, hard to find.)
Why three stars? The book is very good in teaching what Handley calls the reference number method for multiplication. But I think the average reader would have difficulty following some of the explanations for both division methods. Handley's subtraction method (which he says he was taught in third grade) is excellent - recommended for any parent whose kids are having trouble borrowing. There are other interesting things here(meaning things I have not seen before or not seen in awhile)--an easy way to go from Fanrenheit to Celsius or vice versa, multiplying feet and inches by feet and inches, a quick method for mental square root estimates. But I am not sure the average reader will be able to follow all of Handley's explanations. So, next reviewer, whoever you are, please comment on how easy to follow you found the explanations to be. Maybe I am unnecessarily pessimistic. In any case, despite these reservations, the book is recommended.

The easiest techniques I've seen for mental math

In my day job as an occupational therapist, I often have to work with individuals who, for whatever reason, have problems that impair their ability to solve problems, and cope with everyday life. Traditional methods of teaching arithmetic and problem solving, simply do not work for a significant percentage of people. This has lead me to look for alternatives.

In addition, I have always enjoyed reading about science, statistics, and the related areas, but discovered that without understanding higher mathematics, there is an invisible ceiling, where you won't be able to go beyond. I've made it a priority of mine to improve my mathematics abilities to the point I'll be able to apply to graduate school for training in statistics and/or economics.

Where does this book come in? After all, this isn't REALLY mathematics, but "mere" arithmetic. First, if you are math phobic it will boost your confidence. Within days, you will be able to multiply at least 2 digit numbers up to 100, very easily, in your head. You will be able to square a number like 625 within seconds, and get 390625. You will also learn methods for square roots.

It will get your brain to recognize patterns. If you are the least bit curious, you will wonder why these methods work. You will try to figure out a way to prove, to yourself, that these methods work. This recognition of number patterns, and their proofs, is essentially what algebra--that dreaded high school subject, is all about.

With your improvement in algebra, learning calculus is much easier. Once you figure out calculus, probability and statistics will
be much easier to understand. At that point, there will be no limit on what you can learn on your own.

When I'm studying a subject such as calculus, I will typically warm up by doing a few problems in mental math, from this book, to get in the right frame of mind. I notice that I pick up the material a bit faster when I do this. I've looked at Trachtenberg's very interesting work, but I don't find that I ENJOY using his methods (aside from his written long division method). There are simply too many, what appear to be ad hoc rules. Handley's method is more appealing.

If you are an adult who is preparing for some admission test (GRE, GMAT, etc.), I would recommend studying this book as it will give you an advantage on the quantitative section. This is true even if you use some other test prep, such as Kaplan or Princeton Review.

If you are the parent of a "learning disabled" child who has trouble with basic skills, try these methods out. You might find out that your "disabled" child is really a gifted student who hasn't been provided the environment in which to thrive.

First, a great book. I'm enjoying putting some of these methods to use!

Second, in response to Nehal from 4/7/05:

"But what happens when we want to multiply 13 x 54? In this case, we would like to start out with 10 (for 13) and 50 (for 54) giving us 10 x 50 = 500. In other words, we use 2 Reference Numbers: 10 and 50. Next, we make the corrections from here."

Use 10 as the reference number for both. Mentally write

+3 +44

over the 13 and 54 respectively.

Gives

54 + 3 = 57, and 57 * 10 = 570

so 570 +

44 * 3 = 120 + 12 = 132

so the answer to 13*54 = 570 + 100 + 32 = 670 + 30 + 2 = 702

Sure, problems in general get more difficult as you stray from the reference number, that's a given, but it is no big deal.
