Morning Crafts, by Tito Perdue

Thirteen-year-old Leland Pefley was minding his own business, enjoying a day's fishing near his father's farm in Tennessee, when the odd, well-dressed and well-spoken man from the city appeared, inviting Lee to accompany him to a more interesting place. Out of curiosity, Lee followed him, and found himself hustled off to a strange, rustic academy in the wilderness with a group of other boys, all of whom had been semi-abducted as he himself had been. None of them knew why they were there. Some believed they had been brought there to be murdered, or worse. The Academy, it turned out, is an actual school, run by eccentric, curmudgeonly teachers obsessed with training an elite band of boys who will grow up with a passion to preserve some vestige of genuine culture amidst the tide of democratic, egalitarian degeneracy which they see ruining the modern world. To this end, the boys' heads are stuffed, day in and day out, with mathematics, Ancient Greek and classical music, among other subjects. Rankling at first under the teachers' bizarre, authoritarian methods, Lee sticks around, knowing that he can slip away at any time he wants. But, for some reason, he doesn't, and before long, he finds that his teachers are starting to make quite a lot of sense... Tito Perdue was born in 1938 in Chile, the son of an electrical engineer from Alabama who was working there at the time. The family returned to Alabama in 1941, where Tito graduated from the Indian Springs School, a private academy near Birmingham, in 1956. He then attended Antioch College in Ohio for a year, before being expelled for cohabitating with a female student, Judy Clark. In 1957, they were married, and remain so today. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1961, and spent some time working in New York City, an experience which garnered him his life-long hatred of urban life. After holding positions at various university libraries, Tito has devoted himself full-time to writing since 1983. This is his seventh novel to be published to date, many of which deal with the life and times of Leland Pefley. His first novel, 1991's Lee, received favorable reviews in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Reader and The New England Review of Books. His other novels have been praised in Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture, The Quarterly Review and The Occidental Observer.

A strange, alluring, nostalgic and masterly written tale
By The Northern Light
"Ah, Lee. You will live forever in a sphere of glass, and although they can see you, and sometimes you may see them, the best that you can expect is to communicate across the boundary with hand signals. Remember! We don't equip you here for life, Lee, but rather to supersede it." (page 136).

Tito Perdue, now that's a name you won't forget as easily as John Lee's. Being a great admirer of the short novel (and the long, of course, but there is something evocative with a good short novel), I eagerly awaited this book, knowing from the other quality publications put out by Arktos that there had to be something noteworthy with this one too. I sat down to read it, and more or less spent the entire day with the book, which has such a distinctive atmosphere I have seldom encountered in a work, that I didn't put it down before it was over. I can't really point out why, but for some reason reading the book reminded me of reading another favourite book of mine, which incidentally has an author that Perdue himself enjoys, namely Cormac McCarthy's The Road (Oprah's Book Club). Not that the world has gone under in this book as well, but metaphorically speaking I believe the comparison is fair to both. The whole setting is just splendidly done: it feels like venturing to an autumnal South in the 1950's and over it all is this delightful melancholic feeling of loss (and hope) that every sane man by now must feel in this mad world. The thirteen year old protagonist Leland "Lee" Pefley, is spirited away (of sorts) from a leisurely day of fishing in his native Alabama, and trotting along with a much older man he is brought willy-nilly (at first) to a school (of sorts). Now, mind you, this is a very special kind of school. Here the young Pefley is summoned together with other promising boys from all over the South (and some other places), and a whole plethora of teachers, gardeners, stablemen and other vocations train them in the classical arts and crafts of life that until recently were a part of all well-born men's curriculum. Mathematics, ancient Greek and classical music, to name a few of the subjects they are taught, and here they are really taught all day till their eyes bleed and their brains groan. I haven't read the other books by Perdue, but I quickly had to re-prioritize after having read this, for if this book is anything to go by, he appears to be, as even the New York Press pointed out, among the most important present writers in North-America. Also, I have seldom had to learn as many new words in English as Perdue forced me to, but that's a really good thing, as I now am familiar with quite a few Southern phrases and archaic words worthy of H. P. Lovecraft himself!

Ever so quietly (and hesitantly) at first, Leland internalizes the wealth of Europe that he is given, and starts realizing what the teachers are trying to do, and not to mention what his mission in life will be. He will carry the torch of European high- and folk culture forward, when everyone else is forgetting, or not even aware of the rich heritage they are meant to bear. As an arch-reactionary myself, I can sympathize deeply with Pefley's struggle, and I'm over twice his age in the book! For, in an age as dark as this, what else can we do, but remember and carry on as best we are able, attempting to influence those around us and our progeny towards embracing their own identity. I know I will be seeking out the rest of Perdue's books the coming year, for this clever and moving tale of adolescence left me with a great hunger for more tales from the life of this marvellous man named Leland Pefley. In the same sense as The Road did, the book also left with me a clear sense of purpose to carry the torch and never relent, no matter how much the troglodytes attempt to pull us all down to their bog.

Simply put: buy it! It is a wonderful read and well deservingly of five stars.

Dreams of wisdom
By J. A. Brittain
The first page of this novella reveals that the reader will be dealing with a fantasy, when a farm boy fishing in a creek sees "a tall man in suit and tie hiding in the kudzu." This strange man abducts the boy and takes him to a backwoods academy where the boy is forced into a classical education. All this is described in a prose that reminds me of the written descriptions of my memorable dreams over the years. At first, the boy rebels and tries to escape to his farm home; but then he warms to his educational experience and plunges headlong its books. This academy has echoes of Hogwarts about it: the professors are a varied sort with odd appearances, and when the boy excels in his studies, he is given a cloak to wear. The head of the school is a far-right caricature who praises the virtues of inequality and the abhors the vices of progressives and universities. By and by, the boy's intellectual snobbishness causes him to look down on all the aspects of his home, northeastern Alabama, as well as his less intelligent fellow students who are forced into farm work at the school. Now, the boy's "morning crafts" have changed from tending to horses and mules to studying Greek verbs. In the end, the school escapes from America into the friendlier climes of Mexico, but the boy goes on into a further search for education and wisdom.

I presume that there's an autobiographical strain in this book, revealing the tension between the author's Alabama upbringing and his accomplishments in the literary world. He is not shy about displaying his own erudition, with references to Lucretius, Burton's Melancholy and so on. However, that sort of stance becomes more embarrassing if you happen to trip, e.g., Vega is not a constellation and things do not "obviate the need" for something else. So, if you like reading about dreams and"reaching for one's dreams", go buy this. It's not long, so you can read it in a day. And then have a day to forget about it.

Did not enjoy reading this novel - found it somewhat tiresome - but I don't enjoy most modern fiction - too solipsistic and empty in substance

Another Great Book by Dan Thompson
By Elizabeth Guizzetti
I read and enjoyed Dan Thompson’s novel, Here Lies Love, so I was looking forward to the release of The Black Petal. It did not disappoint.

While I tend to read adult fiction, this novel was a real treat. Without spoilers, It follows a teen from current day, Jack, and a Victorian assassin, Blake who find themselves transported to a fantastical world. Thompson deftly developed both characters and their timelines. The switching from the Victorian era to the present to fantasy is easy to follow.

Thompson loves rich description and uses it well in this epic fantasy. In fact, though early drafts of this book apparently was originally written before Here Lies Love, the writing feels more solid as if Thompson is coming into his style.
I enjoyed it immensely.

The Black Petal by Dan Thompson

This book blew my socks off it was so fabulous. I am a slow reader, but could not read it fast enough in the end as it was so very exciting, especially the battle scenes. Dan has his own unique and totally fresh way of telling a story. You can tell from reading it that every detail from the armoury, to the horses, to the types of weapons, all have been thoroughly researched and thought about, so the account of the battle is so totally believable.

I loved that even though the two main characters were men – Blake and Jack – most of the characters were woman and he describes them beautifully, even the ugly oracle. I love all the mythical creatures, and particularly liked Dan’s description of the phoenix bird.

The Black Petal leads you into exploring the lives of two young men who share the same soul. They are both from planet Earth, but from different time frames and have completely different personalities. Jack is an average teenager who starts off unsure of himself, but who’s character grows throughout the story. Blake is a ruthless professional Victorian assassin, very sure of himself, but who’s personality softens after an incident where a woman saves his life. Both get drawn into a parallel universe by a three legged dog, and then meet not only meet each other but all manner of tests and adventures.

This is a jolly exciting read and so very well written. No one I have ever read describes the landscape and the sky as poetically as Dan does. He invents a world that you feel you know or have been to as it’s described so beautifully and accurately. No one is able to transport you to the deepest cave or the highest palace in the sky as Dan does. He describes the fear that coursed through Blake’s body as he fearfully dared to look down whilst riding a flying horse into the sky. No one can touch on the feelings of tenderness in the way Dan did between Jack and his love Lucia.

Also the cover of this book is stunning and the quality of print on cream paper is excellent. If you only buy one paperback this year, I would highly recommend that you buy The Black Petal; it’s a modern classic that you will be able to enjoy time and time again.

The Loneliest Man in the World, by Eugene K. Bird

Without doubt, the most bizarre and controversial event in the History of World War II was the parachute jump by Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess into Scotland on May 10, 1941. Hess was supposedly on a peace mission to negotiate a peace between England and Germany. Hess was supposedly on his way to see the Duke of Hamilton in Scotland, with whom he believed he could negotiate a peace. As to why Hess thought that he could negotiate a peace in this way or why he thought that the Duke of Hamilton was the right person with whom to negotiate peace, this remains a mystery, but it is only the first of a long string of mysteries involving Rudolf Hess. Instead, Hess was put in jail, where he stayed for 46 years until he died in 1987. For 46 years he served a life sentence in West Berlin's Spandau prison. For the last 17 years he was the only inmate in a fortress built to hold 600. Long ago he was the second most powerful man in Germany, Deputy Fuhrer to Adolf Hitler. His name is Rudolf Hess. Now the almost incredible story of the Loneliest Man in the World is told by a man who, as part of the American garrison at Spandau, and later as Commandant, watched over Hess's every move and action, won his confidence, talked daily with him, and kept a day-to-day record. Was Hess mad? Colonel Bird's answer is an emphatic no. Is he the totally evil man that many think. Again, the author demurs. Above all, was he, when he flew to Scotland in the Spring of 1941, trying to make peace with Britain, and did Hitler know what Hess was doing. Readers will find the answers to this and many other crucial questions about the most enigmatic leader of the Third Reich in the pages of this book.

About the Author
Eugene K. Bird (11 March 1926 – October 28, 2005) was US Commandant of the Spandau Allied Prison from 1964 to 1972 where, together with six others, Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess was incarcerated. In March 1971, Bird’s superiors at the US Mission in Berlin became officially aware of the Bird/Hess manuscripts and other documents relating to the proposed book. Bird was interrogated in great detail, placed under house arrest, and eventually made to resign his position as Commandant of Spandau Prison. This episode, in effect, also ended his military career. Bird and his family relocated to Germany permanently. This book about Hess: The Loneliest Man in the World, was published in 1974 in London. In the Epilogue, Bird describes in detail his interrogation and, indirectly, accuses his superiors and brother officers of gross hypocrisy. Many of them knew of his labors, he wrote, and some had even read the manuscripts and encouraged him with the project. After the publication of the book, Bird campaigned to have Hess released from what had effectively become permanent solitary confinement after Albert Speer and Baldur von Schirach were released on October 1, 1966.

Understand Rudolf Hess through the writing of Eugene Bird.
By snicko
Eugene Bird's book is a good starting point for those interested in Rudolf Hess. The reader will gain an insight to his personality, state of mind and mission which led to his captivity for 46 years. First published in 1974, the book's author is a former commandant of Spandau prison who was able to gain the confidence of Hess who he talked openly with. Much of the book deals with the conditions confining all seven inmates, and their day to day dealing and illnesses. For readers not wanting to be continually remided of aging men's problems, like difficulty urinating, irregular heart beats, or constipation then this book is not for you. However this "warts and all" book portrays the honest daily existence endured by Hess for 30 years.
Hess is continually questioned about his knowledge (or lack of) about Barbarossa, if Hitler knew of his flight in advance, and life in general. The reader can form his own opinion upon Hess's answers, and Bird's credibility.
Of particular interest was the Soviet Union's continued rejection of Hess's release. This in turn further exacerbated the rumors and misleading information centered around his flight to Britain during world war two.

RUDOLF HESS-THE LONELIEST MAN IN THE WORLD
By Louise
I highly recommend this fascinating, interesting and revealing book written by one-time Director of Spandau Prison in Berlin Col Eugene Bird. However, before I continue with my review I think it is appropriate for me to quote what Rudolf Hess's son Wolf Rudiger Hess thought of the book. He says in his book 'My Father Rudolf Hess' written in the 1980's the following comments regarding the book:
Bird was U.S Director at Spandau and maintains that he won my father's confidence over the period. My father allegedly gave him permission to use his Nuremberg notes in a publication.
Although Bird's description sounds quite credible in many respects, as a source I consider the book to be of only limited reliability until such time as it's content is confirmed by Rudolf Hess.
With the above in mind, I do not know if the book was ever confirmed as completely reliable by Rudolf Hess (probably not) but Bird's account of things certainly tie in with many facts concerning the 'Third Reich's' most tragic figure.
It is written from the point of view of a humanitarian who wanted to really get to know Rudolf Hess and find out what he was really like. I believe that because of Eugene Bird's kind and compassionate manner, Hess felt able to talk to him and reveal a lot about himself and subjects and events that he had not had the chance to talk about to anyone eles in years of captivity. Eugene Bird states in the book that he believes he was the first person to get close to Hess since Hess's captivity in 1941 which is very probably the truth. Hence you have a very moving and at times very sad glimpse into the life and emotions of Rudolf Hess which would not have been revealed in such detail by other people in Spandau.
The book features Hess's Nuremburg diary entries which make fascinating reading indeed. Also the book features the lives of the other Spandau prisoners up until their various release dates when only Rudolf Hess remained. Eugene Bird is able to tell us the reaction of Hess at that momentous time when he found himself completely alone without Albert Speer and Baldur Von-Shirach.
The book covers Rudolf Hess's illness with a serious stomach ulcer which required hospital treatment. It was after this illness that Bird was able to persuade Rudolf Hess to receive a visit from his wife Ilse and son Wolf who he had not seen since he was 3 years old. The sensitive way in which Bird gently persuaded him to see his family after 28 years is a credit to his sensitivity as a Director and as a man. The book goes on to explain and detail that very first meeting and also later meetings between Hess and his family.
Eugene Bird got to know Rudolf Hess in a very real way and he discovered that Hess was a sensitive, humourous and warm human being who had a sharp intellect and keen interest in things.
A truly fascinating part of the book is devoted to the letters which pointed to the peace mission to Great Britain of Rudolf Hess in which he made an attempt to stop the war.
Hess explains to Eugene Bird how he was trying to achieve peace in 1941.
The book has an unexpected 'twist' at the end. As a result of Bird's liaison with Rudolf Hess to write the book, Bird is questioned and put under house arrest for a time and asked to resign his post as Spandau Director. These events came as a complete shock and surprise to Eugene Bird and he writes about it as an epiloge in the book.
He ends the book by saying he hoped that Rudolf Hess would be released from Spandau one day and that only time would tell.
Sadly, it never happened.

So Cool!
By J. D. Fegler
I just discovered this series of books - and just ordered The Great History Search. It's a fun book that both my 5 and 9 year old girls enjoy - and me too! Each page is a starting point for a discussion on a country/area, with a brief explanation of the different things you search for in each place. Places covered include: USA; Amazon Rainforest; Iceland; Greece; Morocco; Trinidad; The Alps; The Middle East; East Africa; Siberia; China; India; Thailand; Japan and Australia. An added challenge is that you don't progress through the book from front to back. You have to solve another puzzle to find which place you should go to next! Kids wouldn't even realize they were learning they're having such fun!

many aspects to explore
By A Customer
This book has been a big hit with my 5 y.o. son. He loves Waldo type search books and this book has similar searches, but also incorporates different cultures, new vocabulary, and tidbits of information. This book has been a great starting point for many discussions about other cultures and other countries. I'm looking forward to bringing the History Search book out of our attic soon too.

I did a Great Search for all of the books in this series and I'm exceptionally pleased
By M. Liljeberg
Each of the books in this series is different from the others with no duplication, including The Great City Search's On The Street pages. This particular one is one with many small details, so I suggest good lighting when reading it. My girls enjoy these books both for the factual text and the searching. There's an extra puzzle checklist at the beginning vs. at the end in this book.
