Basics of analog & digital PLLs, orthogonal to Wolaver.

This book is certainly worth owning. It is 1 of 7 PLL books that I own. I use it as a reference for the basic PLL linearized transfer functions even after I found that the transfer function for the 2nd order PLL with ideal integrator is incorrect.

Best covers analog PLLs with each block replaced by a digital implementation based on the incremental improvements made in standard TTL implementations of PLLs offered over the decades. This allows the reader to fully understand each digital block and the PLL in a way that is excellent for an introductory text.

The digital PLL is a numerical implementation of each PLL function, which has by definition an analog function. One way to implement such a numerical PLL is via replacing each analog function with the equivalent numerical function, without much focus on the Z domain and digital signal processing (DSP) concepts. That is what this book does. Look elsewhere for a book with heavy use of Z domain math (consider the Kluwer Acedemic Press Book 'Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Analog and Digital' by Stephen (?) for more DSP math.

Best's approach is viable. I have personally designed a leading edge all-digital PLL, adding patent pending analog enhancements, and can asure the reader that straight-forward DSP approaches do not lead to the optimal designs, at least at the high data rates. Understanding of the PLL in analog form, and then adding the digital analogues is an excellent way to go. Best's book is surprisingly very different from Wolaver's book, almost orthogonal; start with Wolaver, then add Best if adding digital gates step by step to an analog PLL is of interest to you (it was to me).

A good book to learn the theorie of PLL

I think this book give designers a good understanding of the fundamental theorie of PLLs. It gives you step by step the necessarly mathematical background to understand how a PLL is working. The examples are mostly for analog PLLs, but the mathematical theories are the same for all kind of implementations.
I really like the chapter where the different PLL-Parameters are defined: It clearly explains and defines the different working modes like "hold", "lock" or "pull-in".
The book is not for people who are looking for prepared applications. Even when the subtitle of the book suggests this.

Useful but not very comprenhesive

The book is most helpful, but a little out of date with regards to moderm PLL techniques, especialy charge pump o/p types and makes no referance to lead lag passive filter loops. This hinders the usefulness of the enclosed program which would benefit from a 'modernisation'

From Sex Addiction to Intimacy

Relationships in Recovery offers much needed relationship solutions for those recovering from sexual addiction. In SAA meetings, participants often seem to pine for finding the right partner. In keeping with the Twelve Step ideal of "cleaning up our side of the street," Dr. Hatch emphasizes doing our part to become a better partner. In particular, she offers suggestions for knowing when we are ready to date.

In particular, the author has us take a look at all the things we want in a partner--then does something challenging: has us ask how we ourselves rate in these areas, and then helps set a course in becoming this type of person. In my own recovery experience, when I've felt centered, and not necessarily looking for someone, then an opportunistic meeting has often happened. Dr. Hatch then lays the groundwork for setting goals around improving in each of these areas, as well as setting healthy boundaries for relationships to come.

A must-have book for the recovering addict!!

Finally - a book to fulfill an important niche - that of the recovering sex addict who is single or would like to get a new start in his or her existing marriage or primary relationship. With the help of clear explanations and relevant exercises Dr. Hatch describes the preparatory work the addict needs to do, how to avoid falling back into old patterns, and what to aim for, expect, and bring about in a healthy relationship. The "Meditations for Relationships" section is the icing on the cake, a gift and a guide for every person in relationship. I highly recommended this very useful book.

The Bible, Assyrian palace records, and Greek and Roman literature contain horrifying accounts of siege warfare. Ancient Hebrew prophets and Greek poets such as Homer and Euripides described it as a world without limits or structure or morality, in which men violated deep-seated taboos about sex, pregnancy, and death.

The idea of total war--meaning war waged against a whole people, rather than merely its army--didn't start with bombing raids during the Second World War. Nor did it begin with Sherman's march to the sea. Instead, it dates to the beginning of recorded history itself. "All the characteristics of modern war--the blurring of the line between battlefield and society, the engulfing of women and children in the violence of war, the destruction of society's infrastructure, the uprooting of entire populations--were anticipated in ancient siege warfare," writes author Paul Bentley Kern. This fascinating book begins by describing the theory of siege warfare and its engineering, but focuses mainly on its historical practice from biblical times through the Roman period. Kern shows that besieging fortifications was mainly a technical problem that put warriors on the sidelines. When the problem was solved, however, "the assaulting troops found themselves not on a conventional field of battle opposed by an army but in a maze of streets and buildings opposed by an entire population," writes Kern. "Often they were under orders to sack the city, one of the few circumstances in which military commanders countenanced indiscriminate violence." Kern does not shy away from this uncomfortable fact, and actually focuses on the special plight of women and children: "Their presence threatened the notion of war as a contest between warriors, undermined the conventional standards of honor and prowess that governed ancient warfare, and paradoxically made war less restrained by creating a morally chaotic cityscape in which not only the walls collapsed but deeply rooted social and moral distinctions as well." A Good Overview of Siege Warfare

So little has been written about ancient siege techniques that I was immediately intrigued when I first saw this book. After reading it I must profess that I enjoyed it immensely. It is at times plodding and repetitive, however it does an excellent job of emphasizing the importance of siege warfare in the ancient world. I find that I now have a much deeper appreciation of what was required to take or protect a city in ancient days.
This book provides a good overview of the developments of siege tactics throughout ancient history. Most of the subject matter deals with empires or peoples near the Mediterranean. The author does a good job of organizing the available sources to back up his discussions of different cultures, sieges, etc. At times he does attempt to expand on the sources and usually his opinions are logical interpretations. An added bonus is his bibliography which is an excellent source of references for continued research if desired.
All in all I found this book to be very interesting. It handles a lot of subject matter in detail that is usually passed over or severely summarized by military historians. Even a seasoned military historian will find that he has learned something from this book. It brings a surprising level of humanity to ancient warfare. However, one thing I do wish the book had was a chapter that went in depth into the design and manufacture of the different siege machinery. This is touched on but not nearly enough.

Interesting & Detailed Account of Ancient Siege Warfare

After I finished reading this book I was not too sure how I felt, I was a bit ambivalent about how good or bad it was. At times I found it hard going to continue but then it picked up with a very interesting account of some particular siege or battle. However other times I felt it was becoming repetitive, the same story with variations on the number of dead or the way the victors tortured or killed their enemies. There is no doubt that the author has thoroughly researched the subject but the narrative came across a bit dry in the end. The chapters on the Roman army's conduct of siege operations stand out. There were a number of line drawings and maps but I found the maps to be of poor quality, I'm sure better ones could have been found. If you are looking for a detailed account of how siege operations were carried out in ancient times and the result of those sieges then this is the book for you. I can only say that I did not find the narrative as free flowing as I usually like in a book, it was almost like reading a school text book at times. I would recommend this book only for those who have a keen interest in the subject matter.

Escribir una buena historia para un autora no debe ser nada fácil. Imaginen escribir una en la que su protagonista sea escritora y su editorial le exija cambiar de género a uno erótico. Pues eso es lo que le sucede a Evangeline. Una joven criada por su abuelo estricto luego del abandono de su madre la cual muere y le deja a su cargo una media hermana de 15 años, una edad difícil que Eve, como le gusta que le llamen, tratara de convivir con su hermana Brittany. Evangeline no tiene nada de experiencia en el amor. Sabe y esta segura que escribir sobre erotica será muy difícil pues a la hora de hacer esas escenas que tanto nos encienden se quedará en blanco. Es por eso que el fabuloso Doctor Sex le hace una fabulosa propuesta que no podrá negar. Aunque se resista lo necesita para aprender. DSex como suelen llamarlo en su programa radial es Max y no puede resistir la tentación que le provoca Eve y le hace la propuesta para ayudarla con su historia. Es interesante ver como la autora detalla el libro que Evangeline va escribiendo durante la trama. Enseñame es un libro también instructivo, pues a la medida que Eve aprende uno también. No crean que ella es una mojigata, solo es una inexperta en el tema, pero con una personalidad independiente. Ayram fue muy cuidadosa en el momento de narrar las escenas eróticas para no caer en mas de lo mismo y tampoco dejar de describir cada una. El lenguaje utilizado en la novela es universal, por lo que es de fácil lectura. Te atrapa desde el inicio y quedas suspirando por Max. Eso si te advierto que quedaras con ganas de leer mas, pues cuando se pone interesante y tu corazón esta al borde, este libro termina con un continuará. Bueno no digo mas por que seria dar spoiler.

About the Author
Vamik D. Volkan is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, an Emeritus Training and Supervising Analyst at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute and the Senior Erik Erikson Scholar at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He was the Medical Director of the University of Virginia's Blue Ridge Hospital and director of the University of Virginia's Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction. He is a past president of the International Society of Political Psychology, the Virginia Psychoanalytic Society, the Turkish-American Neuropsychiatric Association, and the American College of Psychoanalysts. He is also the author or co-author of forty books and the editor or co-editor of ten more. He has served on the editorial boards of sixteen professional journals including the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and has published more than four hundred scientific papers or book chapters.

This book was a great book for me to read as I entered the ministry. I have purchased Crucified by Christians for many friends who had terrible experiences with co-workers or church leaders. However, the ones who benefit the most have been the spouses who watched the one they loved being deeply hurt. It is a great read and gives a perspective to the hardships we face in life's journey.

Hard-hitting. Profound. Scriptural. Convicting.

Gene Edwards reveals the good work of God in a crucified life. Yieldedness, surrender, and forgiveness. In fact, not learning the lesson of forgiveness is tantamount to smashing the face of your spiritual clock; we will go no further with God. Our progress is stopped.

However, on the other side of hurt, humiliation and harm of a "personal crucifixion" lies a closer walk with the Lord: a walk of profound peace, of deep assurance, and abiding love where the world, at last, loses its surly grip on our lives.

We think it strange for a loving father wanting, even orchestrating, our hurt and I'm not convinced I agree with Edwards on that point. I don't believe the Father uses disease, poverty, lies or other weapons of the evil one to destroy his children. In fact, they have been given authority over all the power of th enemy. Rather, God is looking for his children to crucify themselves, from the inside out: to come to a place of yieldedness, surrender and trust upon him alone.

However, one thing is certain, the world hated the Lord. Falsely accused him, slandered him, humiliated, tortured and brutally murdered him. Can His followers and disciples expect anything less?

"Exquisite Agony" does a masterful job of answering the question: "How would love respond?"
