I'm lukewarm about this book

Few would disagree that the guitar is a difficult instrument to learn and master. Many people walk away from the guitar as soon as it starts to hurt their fingers. Many who make it past that stage still end up abandoning the guitar within 6 months to a year for various reasons usually relating to frustration and discouragement. I've been a guitarist for many years now and if there's one thing I've learned it's to keep things simple. The simpler the better really. So when I come across an author who seems to go out of his or her way make the guitar more complicated than it already is I get turned off.

A number of people have said they were left scratching their heads when they first went through this book. I think it has to do with the author's tendency to take a more complicated approach to any given subject than is really necessary. I can see what the author is after. For him it's all about exploring the unexplored. He wants to always be thinking outside the box. I get it. But still I think the extra complications he adds could be avoided.

The copy I have was published way back in 1987. I can't help but wonder if the author would still take the same approach today. I doubt it. But the fact remains that this book has stood the test of time while so many others are long since out of print and forgotten. That counts for something. On the other hand, another reviewer made a reference to the story of the emperor's clothes. I have to agree that's an uncanny analogy.

I'm not trashing this book. Don't get me wrong. And heaven forbid I should invoke the wrath of what appears to be a small cult following around this book. I just think some of the enthusiasm I've seen regarding this book is a bit over the top. I also think there are other books that get the same information across in a way that's far easier to understand.

I've gone through this book several times now. I'll shelve it for awhile and then go through it again to see if it does more for me than the last time I read it. But each time I just never get very excited about it. Certainly nowhere near the level of some of the raving reviews I've seen. It's partly because I'd already learned much of what the author talks about before I came across this book. And then there were a number of things I simply didn't agree with or that I thought were of little use to me personally.

When it comes to guitar instruction books and videos, I guess it gets down to personal taste. One of my favorite books is "The Guitar Cookbook" which I bought at the same time I bought "The Advancing Guitarist." The two are somewhat similar although they take an entirely different approach. Another favorite was "How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons." That may have been the single most important music book I've ever read despite the fact that it has nothing to do with the guitar. But it's possible others could read those books and get very little out of them.

In "The Advancing Guitarist" you'll find some choice nuggets of wisdom. And while I wasn't nearly as impressed as so many others seem to be, one thing that really does come across is the author's passion for exploring every facet of the guitar from every possible angle. This book can help you break out of any molds, narrow grooves or boxes you may have allowed yourself to get stuck in. That could make it well worth the price of admission for certain people.

What you get out of this book seems to depend on where you are as a guitarist. And although you could end up confused or frustrated reading this book by itself it can put some important questions in your mind that you might not otherwise think to ask. With diligence you'll find the answers one way or another. As the author said it's up to you what use you make of this book.

One of the best

Quite simply, this is one of the best books on digital photography I have read (and I have read quite a few). The beauty of the book, as its title suggests, is that it is geared specifically for digital photographers. The authors have not tried to write a generic book that applies to both digital and film: They recognize that differences do exist. They also recognize that many of today's photographers do not have a background in film photography and do not try to make analogies or comparisons with film.

Another thing I like is that the authors are not phony purists. They do not try to push "raw" down your throat as the only way to go, like most authors, but rather, recognize that jpeg works just as well in the vast majority of cases for most of us. They also recognize that the digital camera's automatic controls work just fine in most situations but stress that the photographer needs to know how to override them in those situations that require something a bit different from what the meter reading suggests. The many chapters in the book cover those situations and explain how to make critical adjustments to the camera's meter reading to get the ideal exposure.

In terms of content, the book covers everything you need to know about exposure and lighting and includes numerious sample photographs to illustrate the points made. These photos have been taken, not by the authors, but by recognized photographers. As such, the illustrations are not concocted to make a point, but rather, show how great photographs are made.

The book's greatest strength, however, is in the writing style. The authors know how to write and explain things in a way that is easy to understand. However, that's not to say that this is a basic book. Although it covers the basics, it is far from basic. It is easy to understand because the writing is clear and the explanations are thorough.

If you've read the other books on exposure and have been left feeling you need more, this is the book for you. If you haven't read the others yet, skip them and go right to this one.

Great book for someone wanting to make the jump from novice to advance

I am a professional photographer and bought this book thinking it was more technical.
In my opinion this book is geared to the amateur enthusiast who wants to take their photography to the next level.

The main difference between and average photo and a photo that just pops is lighting. So many photographers make the mistake in thinking they need the latest and greatest dSLR or a new lens or whatever.

This book shows the importance of lighting and how to achieve certain styles. For someone that has never dealt with lighting, this book is perfect for them.

This book does deal with mostly digital photography. For the person that said it doesnt...All I can say is where is the chapter on light meters? There is none. Instead the author focuses on using the histogram found in most digital cameras to determine if your exposure is correct.

Overall, I didnt learn anything new but I think its a great book for someone wanting jump up to intermediate status.

Great practical book for intermediate level

This is an excellent book for developing the practical skills of exposure and lighting. It is readable, clear, well-presented, wide-ranging, succinct, and full of well-chosen example images to illustrate the techniques described in the text.

Although I have read many books on photography, this book really increased my awareness of light and my skill in handling exposure. My photographs have improved, my photography is more confident and enjoyable, and I find myself looking at the world in a new way.

I found this book much more helpful than books like Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) which I found too vague to be instructive. Compared with my favorite general reference on photography, The New Manual of Photography, this book naturally has much more detailed coverage of lighting and exposure, but also has more relevant information about exposure in digital photography.

There are some very minor errors in technical detail. For example flash power is measured in watt-seconds, not watts per second. And surely it is not so hard to explain that f/8 means one-eighth of the focal length! These are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent book.

In today’s postcolonial world, and with the rise of more powerful regional governments, the tension between universal human rights arguments and local opposition or backlash is more clearly delineated than ever but no closer to satisfactory resolution.

Using this for textbook

This is a nice account of the development of the topic of human rights in the West and can well serve as a suitable introductory textbook on history of human rights. And this without being encumbered by 8 pounds of needless and useless pages of splitting hair on this or that issue. But certainly this is not an ideal textbook. In fact, I have not found an ideal book on the subject to use for my college classes on this newish topic. My wife as usual, tells me "If you don't like it, then write your own buster!" Very apt observation which shuts me up nice and good, and prevents me from being over critical of the works of others who ACTUALLY finished and published theirs.

However, that does not mean I cannot be a bit critical. Somehow it seems this work was rushed through some kind of deadline as it is rife with typos, more so in some chapters than others, as well as incomprehensible sentences that pop in as frequently. It also rambles unnecessarily, wasting time and attention on total irrelevancies or going on tangent. A good editor--not the current airheads who are too busy answering phones than editing a written academic work--could have turn this otherwise informative work into a much much better book by weeding out the rambles, catch the typos and rephrase some sentences.

There are also historical inaccuracies and the general lack of knowledge by the author of anything non-Western: philosophers, politicians, political and social evolution of the rights of man in those other 90% of the world society, etc etc. He is not alone. This malady is pervasive in the West (and in the East, where they know even less about us as we know about them!) Which means, the book should have been retitled BY THE EDITOR(s) "Human Rights in Western History" which would have been accurate while keeping the book as valuable all the same. Most of us really need just the history of human rights in the West any way, even if we pretend to care about the rest of world (of which we know nothing substantive and beyond the maddeningly superficial headlines).

I do recommend this book as a textbook, however. It is a good work. No need looking for anything better, because there are none. Remember Voltaire: "Better is the enemy of good."

A series of vignettes, rather than a structured novel, House on Mango Street is Sandra Cisneros's semi-autobiographical account of growing up Chicana in a poor area of Chicago. Esperanza Cordero, at age eleven, has already discovered that being able to communicate in English is a key to worldly success, and she has begun recording stories of her neighborhood, friends, and everyday life, hoping one day to become a writer. Recreating one year of her life, she vividly depicts the children's fierce loyalties to each other, their alienation from mainstream society, and their goals in life, sadly limited by the culture and its low expectations for girls and women.

Maintaining a childish innocence, Esperanza's first person account reveals her growing awareness of alternatives to her Mango Street existence. She is saddened that her friend Sally, an abused child, never escapes, marrying very early ("in a state where children can marry before they have finished eighth grade"). Alicia, an older, highly motivated friend, however, works to achieve an education and spends long hours traveling to and from school so that she can move beyond Mango Street. Her prescient Aunt Lupe tells Esperanza to "Keep writing. It will keep you free," and a psychic tells her that she must work hard and write so that she can "come back for those who cannot make it out on their own."

Dealing with everyday issues of maturity, a growing awareness of her own sexuality, and her resentment of a world which does not value women, Esperanza is an astute observer, telling stories filled with the humor, wonder, and sometimes heartbreak. As she tells about innocently riding in a stolen car; about the death of her friend Marin's boyfriend whose Mexican parents will never hear of his death because no one knows where to find them; about being assaulted while waiting for her friend Sally, who never answers her pleas for help; about Mamacita, who never leaves her apartment because she is cannot communicate in English; and about her own mother's inability to travel on public transportation because she is afraid, she recreates Mango Street with all its limitations--and excitements.

Like a red balloon which wants to escape its anchor, Esperanza dreams of having a better home, a better life, and greater opportunities. "I have decided not to grow up tame," she says, but she is firmly anchored to Mango Street through her experiences, and these, she discovers ironically, will eventually become the source material for her writing. Through Mango Street, Esperanza defines herself, but through her writing, she will set herself free. n Mary Whipple

Wonderful read that explores difficult concepts without being unnecessarily convoluted.

The House on Mango Street is a classic, and a masterful example of expert vignette writing. It's a quick read, the writing is very natural but the concepts are uncomfortable and stick with you after reading. Though often a book that is assigned for school projects and whatnot, it's a read that deserves to be treated with respect outside of the classroom.

Even though this book was written in prose, it almost felt like poetry. I would find myself reading in a rhythmical way as if I were reading poetry. This is the kind of book that you can pick up and open it anywhere and start reading. This book is brilliant!
