Thank you so much for your book!!! It is the best book that I have ever
read about marriage counseling. I finished reading the whole book within
2.5 hours I was not able to put it down. Every single page described me
and my marriage and I can not thank you enough for putting it down so
black and white! I have been married for 7 years and most of the time I
disrespected my husband, blamed him mostly for everything, and saw myself
superior to him. Yesterday, the camels back broke and I found myself
hitting rock bottom. Yesterday night I think I had the first true
conversation with my husband since before our marriage! God is mercy, he
send me through you the help I needed!! Thank you again!

highlights socio-economic and political issues in an entertaining play

I first read this play when I was 14. I didn't understand all the socio-economic and political issues until I was 19. It was during this period that I became a confirmed socialist (or rather left leaning in my politics).

When I first read the play - I remember a few classmates being confused that one family encountered the same girl, which went beyond coincidence - far too contrived. This is NOT the case - that's just a twist - if you had assumed that than you'll not be able to sympathise with Eva Smith's plight (society prefers strong characters even if s/he are victims suffering the utmost misfortune).

The play intends to illustrates the inequality between the classes, and how dangerous this inequitable situation is if there are no safeguards. Eva is just a random chick - imagine if things were going against you because you "dallied" with the a powerful/wealthy family/ corporate/ entity - well if there are no laws protecting you - you are screwed.

Prior to Clement Atlee's government, there was no Welfare State. Poor single women who became pregnant were abandoned. Women were also too frightened to report incidents of rape if committed by a member of the "respectable" class.

There was no NHS, hence healthcare was the luxury of the privileged classes (prior to the NHS child mortality rates were obscene).

The play conveys the vulnerability of women such as Eva. We see how Sheila (a middleclass wealthy girl) uses her wealth to intimidate a shopkeeper into sacking Eva over a whim. This action demonstrates the lack of employment laws and the necessity to enforce these laws.

Synopsis: The play is a three-act drama, which takes place on a single night in 1912, focusing on the prosperous middle-class Birling family, who live in a comfortable home in Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands".The family is visited by a man calling himself Inspector Goole, who questions the family about the suicide of a young working-class woman, Eva Smith (also known as Daisy Renton). The family are interrogated and revealed to have been responsible for the young woman's exploitation, abandonment and social ruin, effectively leading to her death. Long considered part of the repertory of classic "drawing room" theatre, the play has also been hailed as a scathing critique of the hypocrisies of Victorian/Edwardian English society and as an expression of Priestley's Socialist political principles.

Thought-Provoking

This is a must-read. I re-read it recently and simply became engrossed, as I had been the first time I read it many years ago. This is, arguably, J.B. Priestley's masterpiece (though some would opt for the Good Companions instead). I was lucky enough to see the staged production about 15 or so years back, which was fairly true to form and every bit as interesting. The central tenet of this work, which becomes stamped in every reader's mind long afterwards, is that our actions have consequences. More specifically, be careful how your words and actions impact others. Thought-provoking, to say the least.

How to Read the "Wheel of Time" series

In 1990, I picked up a book by a writer named Robert Jordan, who was mainly known among fans of fantasy for the Conan novels he penned, which were among my favorites at the time. I bought it without a moment's hesitation and loved it. The Eye of the World followed the classic formula high fantasy had been treading since Tolkien wrote of hobbits leaving the Shire with Nazgul in pursuit.
Getting to the end of the book and realizing it was the first in the series was icing on the cake of a thrilling, fast paced fantasy read. I couldn't wait for what I assumed would be the conclusion, the third book in the series. After all, nearly all high fantasy before the 90's were trilogies.
Alas, Book 3 did not wrap up the story, and in a pre-Internet world, I had no way of knowing that Jordan intended for 12 books. By the time book 6 came out, I was tired of waiting for closure.
So I got stuck at book seven for several years. Last year, I began listening to Book 7, sure that I'd be using it to augment my actual reading of the book. I'm not sure I've picked up a Jordan novel since. But I am about to begin Book 11. And I'm looking forward to the posthumous collaboration of Jordan with Brandon Sanderson. So, to all those who have given up on Jordan, and wished they hadn't, or to those who are thinking about starting but have heard too many negative reviews, here's how I recommend reading Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series.
1. Understand that Jordan loves detail. He describes clothing in so much detail, that if "Wheel of Time" ever gets optioned for film or television, the costume designers will be able to go for a lot of coffee breaks. He is fond of giving elaborately detailed descriptions of every character, even minor ones.
2. The repetition of previously established plot elements in subsequent books is for people traveling on planes who pick up book 5 in the airport. It allows them to enter the world enough to get through the read. It's a device publishing companies use with bestselling series like this to ensure that the series remain a bestseller. While I have never started any series mid-way through, some people apparently do, and these passages are for them.
3. Jordan likes to weave intricate plots with a cast of characters so large it necessitates a glossary at the end of each book. Many of the books are entirely character based, and so seem to have "no action" taking place. This is because many readers want someone to storm a tower, engage in a climactic battle, or throw a ring into a fiery pit. Jordan is too busy marrying characters or introducing a new plot thread to bother with such things. And while he may not talk about a character for one book, he almost always returns to them.
4. I started thinking about "Wheel of Time" as a television series. It's long enough to sustain several seasons, and the cast is basically the OC meets LOTR. We watch TV one episode at a time. I began to view the chapters in each book as "episodes" of "Wheel of Time" as a television series, and each book as a "season." I don't like every episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and there are some seasons I like better than others. Some of my favorite episodes are in my least favorite seasons. But I love the characters, and I want to see what happens to them. I love the characters in Wheel of Time. I want to see what happens to them. So I keep "tuning in."
5. I got over the reasons I quit. Simply put, they were my reasons. I had expectations of Jordan he never intended to fulfill. I expected him to wrap it up in a trilogy. He didn't. I expected him to snap Rand out of his sullen funk. He didn't. I expected him to stop telling me about the embroidery on coats or dresses. He didn't. I expected him to bring a certain major character back from the dead. He didn't. And finally, I expected him to finish before he passed away. And he didn't.
It was that last one that really galvanized me. When I heard he had terminal cancer (many years after it was a reality), it got me thinking about the legacy the man would leave on this earth. An epic bestselling fantasy series. And I realized that, to quote Elvis and Sinatra, he'd done it his way. I might not like some of the choices Jordan made, but I love the world he created and the people walking through it. And I want to know how they fare in the end.
So that's my journey to Book 11 of "Wheel of Time" and I share it because I want new readers to know what to expect, but also to let go of those expectations, and know that the journey is worth taking. Especially if you want to be there when the final novel is released next year.
Me? I'll be starting book 1 again this fall and listening to all the previous "Seasons" of "Wheel of Time," one per month, in anticipation of the final installment. The Wheel of Time turns...and I'll be "turning pages" with it.

A Tremendous Start, But Beware

The Wheel of Time is probably the best-known and most widely read fantasy series other than The Lord of the Rings.
When this book was published in 1988 or 1989, it created a sensation -- a tremendous first volume that had the usual good-evil battle and tons of action but also was filled with magic, history, politics, sociology, cultural background and realistic characters. When I re-read the first five books, I was amazed at the details of history and politics that Jordan provided in his world. Jordan also has numerous protagonists, not just one or two primary ones like many other fantasy writers.
Moreover, Eye of the World features strong men and, through their magical abilities and powerful personalities, stronger women. Jordan has been rightly lauded for the prominent and powerful roles he created for the female characters.
The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn, The Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven followed and created a tremendous series such that The New York Times noted that Jordan had come to dominate the genre that Tolkien made famous.
In Eye of the World, the writing is smooth, the various characters and their motivations work well, and there's action aplenty. The sense of innocence and mystery that correspond to the heroes' relative lack of knowledge of their surroundings and the world at large is palpable and realistic.
Unfortunately, starting with Lord of Chaos (book 6), Jordan's creation became unwieldy. Instead of concentrating on following the themes and story-threads of books 1-5 (which combined are more than 3500 pages, hardcover), he created new storylines, bogged down the narrative and halted the pace of the epic. Book 8 in particular is an unmitigated disaster -- 650 pages (hardcover) of wheel-spinning (pardon the pun) with almost no progress to the story. Book 9 began to jump-start the narrative once again.
The series is at 10 books (the tenth will be published in about two months from now) and growing (13 total possible -- it's a common numerical theme in the books), thus the last volume will be published in 2006, at the earliest.
The Eye of the World is great, as are the next four in the series. They are, however, addictive, so know what you're getting into.

An original, fantasy epic

This book was recommended to me by the manager of a brick and mortar store nearby. I have read a great deal of science fiction/fantasy, and after a while, it all starts to feel the same. You know what I mean: how many times can we revisit Tolkein-esque charcaters like elves, dwarves, and orcs? I was very pleased to discover an entirely new world.
Robert Jordan has created a landscape of magnificent proportions. Accents, legends, superstitions, politics...His amazing attention to detail allowed me to become fully immersed in the story. Even more surprising is that the quality of his writing is maintained throughout the book's length of 782 pages. I couldn't put this novel down, with the result that I finished it well inside of a week.
This is the first book of a series, and the reviews for some of the later books aren't as glowing. However, I feel that this book is a great read, and can stand on its own. It is not uncommon for series to degrade over time -- take a look at "Wishsong of Shannara"by Terry Brooks, "The One Tree" by Stephen R. Donaldson, or "The Sorceress of Darshiva" by David Eddings. All three of these books fail to live up to the quality of others in their respective series, but that doesn't mean you should avoid the series altogether.
"Eye of the World" provides us with an epic that is also refreshingly new. Robert Jordan presents us with a world that is the most richly colorful since Tolkein. If you're a fan of fantasy, then don't miss reading this book.

Each chapter of her book revolves around a theme: difficulties in establishing a psychiatric diagnosis, patients who intentionally injure themselves, the responsibility of involuntary psychiatric hospitalization and treatment, patients who are preoccupied with and tormented by their essentially normal anatomy, and how the mind can make the body sick. About the Author
Dr. Christine Montross is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, and Co-director of the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Scholarly Concentration at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  She is also a practicing inpatient psychiatrist. Dr. Montross’s previous book, Body of Work, was named an Editors' Choice by The New York Times and one of The Washington Post's best nonfiction books of 2007. She and her partner, the playwright Deborah Salem Smith, live in Rhode Island with their two young children.

Sensitive, poignant and extremely worthwhile

Again, the opportunity to read for the Amazon Vine has presented me with an amazingly rewarding experience. Dr. Montross' book is an extraordinary excursion not only into some of the more bizarre expressions of - as her subtitle says - the mind in crisis, but also into the convoluted world of medical ethics. She even delves, with sensitivity and poignancy, into deep questions of the overlap between mental illness and spirituality, and problems of mortality.

Although some of the case studies Montross gives might seem to go beyond the plausible, I'll admit that I was absolutely convinced of their veracity in the very first chapter, titled "The Woman Who Needed a Zipper". As it happens, during my high school teaching years, one of our "motivational speakers" was a radiology technician who enthralled my students with X-rays showing a patient having exactly the same syndrome, who had swallowed an incredible array of objects - safety pins, nuts and bolts, blades of various sorts, and so on. Likewise, the author's poignant description of the tragic cases of mothers who had murdered their own children, as well as those who had NOT done so but feared their own impulses, reminded me of some of my own personal struggles with parenting. It is both sobering and reassuring to know that one is not alone in having had near homicidal (as well as suicidal) thoughts in moments of extreme stress.

Probably for me the most impressive insight that Christine Montross shared is the perception that in many circumstances where one is dealing with the extreme mental and emotional trauma, the true calling that both professionals and others often have is simply to "abide". She attributes this terminology to her colleague Dr. LaFrance, who mentored her in the treatment of what are classified as "conversion disorders" such as nonepileptic seizures and psychogenic motion disorders. This term implies a very deep level of compassionate and watchful presence - not trying to "fix" things, not engaging in frantic activity and interventions which may do more harm than good, but simply to be WITH the sufferer during the time of crisis.

In addition, Christine Montross gave an extremely vivid and honest discussion of her family life, her challenges as a parent who is also a doctor, and interwove various personal vignettes into the narrative which provided delightful warmth and personality to the clinical descriptions and historical references with which the exceptional study abounds. Although this is my first experience with her writing, when checking out her home page on the Internet, I found that she is also a published poet. I was not at all surprised.

An intriguing and touching book about psychiatric patients and the people who try to help them

I will admit that I am a tough critic when it comes to books about psychiatry because I am a psychiatrist myself. I don't think that this book was written with other mental health professionals as the main audience, yet I learned more about my field and was inspired by the stories of patients and their caregivers. The book is written so that "lay people" can get a glimpse into the world of psychiatry, which is often fascinating and heart-breaking at the same time. There are five chapters, an epilogue, and a prologue. Each contains the story of one or two patients the author, Christine Montrose, encountered in her practice. The patient vignettes are then used as a basis for a discussion of specific diagnoses, often including a look into the history of psychiatry. In each instance the diagnostic and ethical dilemmas as well as the treatment issues involving both the patient and the practitioner are explored.
Dr. Monstrose is an inpatient psychiatrist, so the types of mental illness and the severity of the disorders tend to be more extreme than what is generally seen in outpatient psychiatric practice. However, the issues of the relationship between patient and mental health professional, the frustrating aspects of working in a system where there are often too many "unknowns," and the challenges of dealing with the amazing and complicated mind are universal to the field of psychiatry wherever it is practiced. The author chose to high-light particularly difficult cases in order to discuss these issues in an interesting manner.
I have to admit that at first I felt the book dragged a bit and I feel that this could be improved by changing the first chapter. The book begins with the case of a severely depressed patient and a discussion of how mentally ill patients were treated in the past, particularly at Bethlem("Bedlam") Hospital in England. I think that it would be better if the case of one of the more unusual and "energetic" patients from subsequent chapters was used to start off the book. The information in the epilogue is good and I would still use it, but the lethargy of the patient got passed to the tone of the book at that point. This is perhaps a minor point, but I would be sorry to see readers give up on the book because the first chapter does not draw them in and make them not want to put the book down. The subsequent chapters do that.
Each chapter includes some personal vignettes from the author's life, serving to illustrate a point or to just provide the necessary balance of "health" in the midst of disease. I enjoyed getting to know the author in this way. I also appreciate how she wasn't afraid to reveal her own vulnerability and how that mirrors the vulnerability of every mental health professional and the practice of psychiatry as a whole. There is so much about the mind that is still unknown. I was touched by and could relate to the idea that when there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done, there is value in "the capacity to abide, to sit with the desperate in their darkest moments." The case studies include a patient who ingests foreign objects, a patient who had thoughts of killing her child, and a patient who felt his face was disfigured despite having a normal appearance. Dr. Montrose includes historical and recent information about the various disorders. For example, the chapter about the mother who is admitted due to thoughts of harming her child includes a discussion of the much-publicized Andrea Yates case.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is intrigued by the workings of the human mind. There is much "human interest" in this book to captivate the reader, but also a solid base of information about psychiatric disorders and the medical profession as a whole. The book is gritty and real, so I would add the caveat that it could be distressing for some readers, but I think there is enough hope and compassion in it to balance out the disturbing details that were necessary to a thorough discussion of the subject.

Looking into the Abyss

Dr. Christine Montross is a psychiatrist, she is also a mother, and a great storyteller. In her book "Into the Fire" she tells, as many doctors do, stories of patients she's treated, of lives she's touched. Doctors touch lives, and that is the attraction, the drug if you will, that keeps us coming back for the next hit. To touch somebody, a person, a life and make it better.

Of course psychiatrists touch something most doctors would prefer not to see, not to touch, and pretend it doesn't exist. Mental illness is not something that doctors, or people in general, like to relate to. It is too weird, too strange, to close to things we'd rather not acknowledge. It brings us face to face with the fear that we, too, could be so afflicted, so possessed; that our inner demons, and we all have them, would one day jump out of the cages where we confine them and take over the circus we call mind.

"When you look into the abyss, the abyss looks into you."

Dr. Montross looks into the abyss, and tells us what it's like. And she does not shrink when it looks back into her. She tells that too, in short, emotional personal stories, interjected between her case histories, like page markers in a book.

Presents creation of human life as a wonder granted by God

The Amazing Beginning Of You is a straightforward introduction to the young reader about the miracles of conception, pregnancy, and birth from a Christian perspective. Color photographs reveal the incredible process of maturing from a zygote to a baby about to be born. The act of insemination (and human sexuality per se), is not explained or detailed in The Amazing Beginning Of You, which only briefly alludes to the role of the father in providing sperm. The focus is on presenting the creation of human life as a wonder granted by God. The Amazing Beginning Of You is an excellent and recommended book for Christian parents to answer the question: "Where do babies come from?"

Excellent source for teaching spelling.

I have a daughter with dyslexia and she struggles with spelling. In my previous life before becoming a mother I was an elementary school teacher and I found Rebecca Sitton's spelling program very helpful. I was reminded of her program when my daughter's teacher began giving quizzes using the 50 most commonly spelled words. I then purchased this book so I could work with my daughter at home to provide extra support in spelling. This books shows how important it is to have children master the spelling of commonly spelled words in the context they are used. Rebecca encourages having children write the words in sentences and not just individually, ie. Friday spelling test format. She also encourages teachers or parents to take words misspelled in their writing and work on helping them spell the words they use everyday. I recommend this sourcebook to teachers, tutors and parents. This is the most practical spelling program I have used.
