For Modern Philosophy Afficianados Only!

Eileen O'Neill's annotated, unabridged edition of Margaret Cavendish's Observations on Experimental Philosophy, (part of the Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy Series), is a solid contribution to the history of metaphysics. It has not appeared in print since its second edition in 1668. While considerable work on Cavendish as a literary writer, e.g. her letters, poems and plays, has been done in recent years, less has been done on her work in metaphysics. O'Neill's labors will undoubtedly change this fact. This modern edition makes this work accessible to scholars in the history of philosophy and philosophy of science. It offers critical annotations which situate and clarify this work for the modern scholar, although it may be the case that not enough is said about Cavendish's reliance upon the Scholastics. However, O'Neill does a more than respectable job cross-referencing Cavendish's philosophical arguments with classic specialists of the period in philosophy of science. Readers can look forward to a helpful bibliography as well.

O'Neill's 26 page introduction details Cavendish's political and social environment so that not only her philosophical contributions are reconstituted, but also the historical circumstances surrounding them. Cavendish represents one of many female writers in the mid-seventeenth century, but is the only one to publish works in philosophy under her own name. Thus Cavendish is an important figure on several fronts. Philosophically she outlines a system of natural philosophy, which rejects Aristotle, Hobbes and Descartes. Religiously, she proposes an atheistic system of nature and politically, she calls for a platform which includes women as cognitive, rational contributors to the problems of science and philosophy. This edition of Observations will appeal to all respective disciplines.

The strength of O'Neill's introduction is her discussion of the Stoic influences on Cavendish. O'Neill has done her research to this end. While her brief overview assumes a learned fluency with this era of philosophy, and remains silent about many aspects of the Observations it can still be useful for the disciplined novice. O'Neill is able to delineate how Cavendish's materialist system of nature, with its reliance upon animate, self-moving, non-divisible bodies harkens back to Stoicism. Further, she previews concepts which mature in Cavendish's writings and carry less resemblance to Stocism such as her bifurcation of the Stoics "active principle" into the "sensitive" and the "rational". The introduction also cashes out Cavendish's primary objections to Epicurean Atomism, and her reservations regarding a mechanistic account of natural change. O'Neill takes great care with this latter issue and sets out Cavendish's main arguments. If the introductory essay lacks for anything, it is a discussion about the scholastic influences on Cavendish. The format of the Obervations is clearly reminiscent of Aquinas' Summa, with the problem-response-objection-counter response style, yet no real mention of this fact is made. However, O'Neill does not ignore this issue as is illustrated in the several footnotes which allude to the Schoolmen.

O'Neill offers good footnotes with references to figures such as Hobbes, Boyle, Aristotle, Power, Bacon, Descartes and Hooke. Often, the references are to lesser known works by these authors. Thus, it is clear that serious Cavendish scholars will need to be especially familiar with these works. In this regard, O'Neill tends to offer more detailed and frequent annotations in the sections of Cavendish's work which consider issues in early modern philosophy of science and Atomism, than she does in the considerable section Cavendish spends on the issue of the problem of perception. There is no question that this well researched, documented and annotated edition will allow the labors of Cavendish to be revisited and her voice to once again be heard.

This textbook covers the basics of physiology excellently. Thetext itself is informative yet concise, the descriptions given areclear and it is very comprehensible. Suitable for peclinical years asa primary textbook and also useful for those wanting a quick reminderof the basics, anyone with a general interest in the subject will alsofind the book genuinely interesting and informative. Theillustrations/diagrams are clear, plentiful and complement and clarifythe text appropriately.
The book is divided into 15 chapters, eachone dealing with a specific "body system". The study aidsand self evaluation sections (a series of questions and answers) atthe end of each chapter highlight the key facts and are invaluable asaids to studying the subject. For those who want to extend theirknowledge further a suggested reading list also at the end of thechapter will prove very useful. The physiology of all the mainspecies is covered in great detail, with attention to avianphysiology, which is a major benefit since many general physiologytextbooks tend to overlook this aspect. The basic anatomy of thespecies is also reviewed when necessary, which again aids in theunderstanding of the topic(s) being discussed.
The book presentsinformation in an interesting and inspiring manner and with it's easyto understand text and informative illustrations it really is a mustfor everyone who wishes to learn about animal physiology.

About the Author
N. Thompson Hobbs is senior research scientist at the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory and professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University. Mevin B. Hooten is associate professor in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology and the Department of Statistics at Colorado State University, and assistant unit leader in the US Geological Survey's Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

great book!

Well written and easy to follow book for ecologist. This book explains Bayesian modeling from beginning to end in a way that makes to sense to those of us who are not statisticians.

'Adjustment Team' is a short story that was eventually adapted into the film 'The Adjustment Bureau' in 2011. Philip Kindred Dick was born on December 16 1928, in Chicago, Illinois. Dick and his family moved to the Bay Area of San Francisco when he was young, and later on to Washington Dc following his parents divorce. Dick attended Elementary school and then a Quaker school before the family moved back to California. It was around this time that Dick began to take an active interest in the science fiction genre, reading his first magazine 'Stirring Science Stories', at age twelve. Dick married five times between 1959 and 1973, and had three children. He sold his first story in 1951 and from that point on he wrote full-time, selling his first novel in 1955. In addition to 44 published novels, Dick wrote an estimated 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. One of the greatest authors of the 20th century, with a career spanning 3 decades and 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories. Eleven novels and short stories have been adapted to film; notably: Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly. Dick won the Hugo Award in 1963 and was inducted into the SF Hall of Fame in 2005, and in 2007 he was the first science fiction to be published by the Library of America.

Little in common with the movie, but a decent story for the price.

I was fortunate enough to get passes to see The Adjustment Bureau tonight, which is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's story "Adjustment Team." Five minutes before we were to leave for the theater, I read on IMDB that the movie was based on this story. I reached for my Kindle, and ran a search on Amazon for the movie title and found the Kindle version of the short story. I've read a number of PKD's stories in the past, but not this one. Like most movies based in PKD's stories (such as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, etc.) there is usually very little in the original story that is identifiable in the movie. Adjustment Team/Bureau is no exception, but it's a pretty good read anyway.

The story could be read easily in one setting, but while my wife drove us to the theater, I read half of the story out loud, and then finished it when we got back. The movie deals with bigger issues of personal destiny and God's sovereignty, but the story primarily focuses on the overarching plan of history that is kept in place by the Adjustment Team. The protagonist in the story is already married, unlike Matt Damon's character in the movie who is obsessed with a woman with whom he feels he is destined to be.

This is not PKD's greatest story, but it is always interesting to see how a story such as this can spark an idea for a much more complex movie, such as The Adjustment Bureau. This will not be a long read, but at [...] cents, you're not out much, and the original story is fairly decent in it's own right--even if it does sport a talking dog!

The short story was conceptually great but its shortness left one wanting more. The movie Adjustment Bureau fulfilled that requirement well but the film strayed from Dick's concept. For me it is the film that was rewarding and entertaining. Full marks to to Dick for the concept.

A lot of favorites in this one

Philip K. Dick wrote 121 short stories over his career, mostly for science fiction magazines. Subterranean Press has been collecting them in chronological order over several volumes. The first volume, The King of the Elves, contained 22 stories spanning the years 1947-1952. This second volume, Adjustment Team, covers the years 1952-1953 and includes 27 stories with notes that make up approximately 488 pages.

Many of these stories use themes that were common in 1950s SF shorts -- space exploration, the cold war, racism, xenophobia, and the fear of atomic war and radiation. Like the stories of Ray Bradbury and other popular writers of the time, Dick's stories are full of spaceships, aliens, Soviets, cigarettes, bad marriages, a disdain for 1950s psychology, and high-heeled housewives in aprons. You'll also notice other favorite themes of Philip K. Dick: what's behind reality, playing God through world-building, a vision of a post-robopocalyptic ash-covered Earth, and what it means to be human.

Most of the stories in this volume were new to me and I enjoyed all but one or two of them. My favorites were:

* Second Variety -- A frighteningly realistic-feeling robopocalypse. This haunting story was the basis for the movie Screamers (1995) and one of the best in the collection.
* Jon's World -- A fascinating idea about parallel universes and a criticism of the practice of lobotomy.
* Some Kinds of Life -- One of several anti-war stories in this collection. This one asks what we're really fighting for.
* The Commuter -- Two different realities seem to be colliding. This is a common theme for PKD, and one he does really well.
* A Surface Raid -- One of several stories which imagine a post-war Earth covered in ash with a few remaining humans living underground. All of these ash-Earth stories are terrific. And scary.
* Project: Earth -- Another common theme for PKD: Who is God?
* The Trouble with Bubbles -- "World-building is the ultimate art form." Another story about gods.
* Human Is -- A wonderful look at what it means to be human. I saw the ending twist coming, but this was still one of my favorite stories.
* Adjustment Team -- The basis for the movie The Adjustment Bureau (2010), this is one of several entertaining looks at a possible "back-end" of reality.
* The Impossible Planet -- Another post-apocalyptic cautionary tale which starts with a chuckle and ends with a chill. A beautiful story -- one of the best in the collection.
* Impostor -- Another robot story, and the basis of the film Impostor (2002).
* Survey Team -- This tale about the destruction of Earth has an interesting suggestion about where we came from.
* Prominent Author -- This is another story with a common PKD theme, but I won't mention which one, so as not to spoil the surprise ending. This is one of the few whose ending I didn't see coming and which I would actually consider "mind-bending."

Well, that's a lot of favorites, I guess, but I had a hard time narrowing them down because this collection has so many great stories. Many felt dated and I could anticipate the ending of most of them, but that's because I have, in 2011, the benefit of 60 more years of science fiction literature at my back than Dick's first readers did. Even so, I loved this collection.

The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick Volume Two: Adjustment Team (1952-1953) is an absolute must-have volume for any serious PKD fan, but it's also a great place to start for anyone who wants to become better acquainted with the work of this prolific and highly esteemed science fiction writer.

Karen A. Smith is an Associate Professor in Tourism Management at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. She co-wrote Managing Volunteers in Tourism: Attractions, Destinations and Events (Elsevier Butterworth-Heinemann 2009). Her research interests include the recruitment and selection of volunteers, and the career paths of managers of volunteers.

Leonie Lockstone-Binney is an Associate Professor in Event Management at Victoria University, Australia. Leonie's main area of research expertise relates to volunteering, specifically in event and tourism settings. Leonie has published in several top-tier journals including Leisure Sciences, Tourism Analysis and the International Journal of Hospitality Management.

Kirsten Holmes is a Senior Lecturer at Curtin University, Australia. She has been researching volunteers for over 15 years, particularly in tourism and leisure contexts. She is the co-author of Managing Volunteers in Tourism: Attractions, Destinations and Events (Elsevier Butterworth-Heinemann 2009).

Tom Baum is Professor of International Tourism and Hospitality Management in the Department of HRM, University of Strathclyde, UK. His research interests focus on the workplace in tourism, hospitality and events, including the role of volunteer labour within the sector.

OMG! A Blast from the Past

I mail ordered this book when I was a kid (in the 1960s.) I read it carefully and tried everything in it, but I don't think it worked. It is filled with detailed instructions on how to do everything an eight year old kid would want to do - project your awareness to distant places where young ladies might be undressing, and so on. Unfortunately, none of it worked. But I definitely learned something.

Well written but....

I can be quite the snob about author's style of writing, and this book was well written, but I kept waiting for something to happen. It didn't. In fact, the author often glossed over periods of time when things SHOULD have gone wrong or something exciting should have happened (such as Ertemis' mother meeting Jessalyne for the first time). I guess this really was just a romance novel. That being said, the characters were really well developed and I enjoyed their dialogue. I just wished it wasn't so...meh

Would have liked H/h to be around eachother more

Let me start off by saying that I really liked this book. I like paranormal romances and medival romances. This story kind of put both together. The world building was good, and I always felt like I knew the surroundings. The hero was an aplpha male who was not afraid of his feelings. He was so gentle with the heroine, and the heroine was sweet and never annoying. The secondary charcters were interesting and made me want to hear their story as well. My only complaint was the lack of time the hero and heroine spent together. They spend a good chunck of time in the middle seperated. This seperation made me antsy and ready to move forward. Because of the seperation, the middle dragged a little for me. Don't get me wrong, it was still interesting, but I would have liked the characters to have more of a love story. There is lots of sexual tention but only one sex scene that may not even count, so if that bothers you be warned. All in all, this was a good read but could have been even better. I will read more of this author's works in the future.
