Swiss-born Alberto Bachmann was a concert violinist and composer whose enthusiasm for the instrument compelled him to write about it. He wrote Le Violon in 1906, Les Grands Violinistes du Passé in 1913, Gymnastique à l’Usage des Violinistes in 1914, and culminated his work as a writer in 1925 with the publication of this encyclopedia.

Perhaps one of the broadest accounts of the violin ever written, An Encyclopedia of the Violin is a well-written, fascinating, and at times nostalgic account of violinmakers, performers, violin literature, and more. This is truly an epic and groundbreaking book that covers more information than one would expect from a volume several times larger. Published in 1925, it contains rare photographs of distinguished violins and bows, as well as well as vivid descriptions of intricate details of these instruments, as well as a guide on how make them! Another section is devoted to violin technique, including advice on how to play difficult passages from the violin literature. In addition, there is also a massive dictionary of violinists, containing the author's often insightful analysis into the style of the performers, and also includes their biographical information. One of the Best Children's Books Ever Written

This book was the reason I started reading at 5! After getting too impatient waiting for my father to read one chapter at a time every evening, I was determined to read it myself. And so I did, along with its two sequels. This is a beautiful, majestic collection that will definitely entice children into reading it. It teaches the true value of friendship, which is something that should be understood at an early age. As compared to the present day's Harry Potter, this book is full of fantastic reality, but without darkness and cruelty. It should definitely be published in English for mass distribution!

I consider the publication of this book and its sequels a pinnacle moment in children's literature. Perhaps I sound overly dramatic, but this book is the ultimate in great writing. Karlsson On The Roof is written by Astrid Lindgren, the world's premier writer of children's literature with higher book sales than Dr. Seuss. It is certainly a shame that so many of her books are not published in English when she flourishes elsewhere. Karlsson On the Roof is by far the best book by this terrificly prolific author. It is a wonderfully whimsical feast of a book and it continues to sweep me away into greater heights of my imagination.
PS - I have sent a protest letter to Viking Penguin stating the reasons why this classic should be republished in English. Let's hope this gets somewhere!

I'm working on a text book teaching Jewish culture, heritage, and religion, as it has been depicted through graphic literature throughout the years. Simcha Weinstein's wonderful book has been a gift to me, during my research. As a fellow Jew and comic book fan, I had always been proud of the many contributions my fellow Jews made to the creation of so many classic comic book characters and that the foundation of the Golden and Silver Age of comics could be primarily attributed to Jewish writers and artists, but Weinstein's book demonstrates not just what I previously stated but how many aspects of Jewish culture and lore have found their way into the continuity of classic characters and stories. If you're like me and love learning more about the roles that Jews have played in the creation of your favorite medium, or if you're a true fan of comics and want to learn more about their secret Jewish past, Up, Up, And Oy Vey is the book for you!

This was a very interesting introduction to the backstory and development of superheroes but I wish it was more in depth. There are several short essays with a lot of the same explanations of how Jewish mythos relates to central themes of comic books. Its a good, fast read but is still somehow lacking.
