About the Author
Mike Dowson, born and raised in Manchester / Great Britain, left home at sixteen and moved to Paris. He made snap shots there of everything that he saw and got to know many different photographers. Photography enabled Dowson to travel, to work for Vogue, Elle and Playboy, to become acquainted with pretty women and to also make a decent living in the process.

Thought provoking. One-of-a-kind.

Mr. Dowson's book has been my most enjoyable purchase of the year. If you're simply looking for a very high-quality book of pretty girls at an excellent price, pick up a copy. It's a no-brainer. For me, it's much more than that. There are a few reasons why, but they all center around thoughts and beliefs. Thoughts and beliefs expressed through conversation, reaction, and most importantly inner discourse.

Reactions from the guys visiting my home are predictable. It's the reaction from girls and the subsequent hours of conversation that I enjoy the most. Here are a few of the topics that frequently come up.

1.) A culture of insecurity and external validation seeking masked as narcissism. In nearly every city in the world today you see people taking selfies. After primping and prepping they snap countless shots from numerous angles only to be topped with even more numerous filters and effects. Finally the photo is posted to social media and the wait for the dopamine drip of validation begins. Predictably these selfie snappers want to present a glamorous and interesting picture of themselves to a world of followers they do not know and will never meet.

Mr. Dowson's work is nothing like this. Flattering or unflattering…it doesn't matter. These photos would generally be considered as snapshots. Most importantly they are interesting. When you see the girls you're instantly drawn to their appearance, but quickly your mind wanders to trying to decipher what the heck was going on leading up to, during, and after each photo was taken.

Are these really fashion models? Are they strippers and prostitutes? Are they just "normal" girls from the street? More importantly Dowson, via this thought-provoking book and his excellent blog, ask the viewer if it even matters. They are just people. Young women without pretense and labels.

Are the Moscow stripper or Siberian village fashion model hopeful any different than the young woman globally represented by the pretentious model agency? Does culture even play into the equation or is photography today more about unconsciously revealing human nature as a whole?

Most all of the girls visiting my home are quick to point out that this book is pornography. I disagree. More importantly, who cares? I do, and a lot of the men I know do to, but for an entirely different reason. We're tired of seeing mass produced personal PR photos designed to sell a lifestyle which the subject typically doesn't even live, and which most men know isn't even as desirable as it appears. Which leads to…

2.) Who views this kind of work? Working in this industry I know with certainty that most girls, unsurprisingly, only want photos that present them in a flattering light. In Eastern Europe, where I live and spend most of my time, it's still more patriarchal. These girls that visit my home often say they wouldn't want to, "Ruin their chances to find a valuable guy. A guy with money and education." A quick look at Amazon owned Alexa's rankings show Dowson's blog trends very heavily towards men with the highest levels of education viewing the site from home and work, while the numerous carbon-copy photo bloggers we see trend to high school and college students viewing from school. Counter to what most of the girls think, Dowson's work appeals to the educated man with a (likely high-paying) job, while the mainstream work sells dreams to kids. I've yet to hear a good response from any girls when I present this information.

3.) Mr. Dowson's beliefs. In addition to this book I couldn't recommend Mr. Dowson's blog enough. Not just for the photography, but for the quotes, thoughts, and a look into Mr. Dowson's lifestyle. The Trans-Siberian railway adventure serving as an interesting story, and his thoughts, including his passion for animals, allowing us a look inside the mind of a man who spends so many days in a position many men likely wish they could. No spoilers…I'll let you give it a look for yourself.

4.) Mr. Dowson's first book. As a collectible, this book should only increase in value over time.

Bottom line: This book definitely shines simply as a photo book, but it surpasses that in so many ways. Why would I preorder a book all way back in May, pay to have it shipped all the way to Eastern Europe, and then wait nearly five months to leave a review? Quite simply, because Mike Dowson's work is worth it and the conversations it has produced and continues to produce are priceless. Conversations with my guests, but equally important are the conversations Mr. Dowson work provokes the reader to have with themselves.

Gorgeous Imagery from a Superb Photographer

Mike Dowson is a commercial photographer based in Manchester, England. His work has appeared in Elle, Vogue, GQ, Playboy, and many other publications and advertising campaigns. His nudes have achieved iconic status on the internet. His flair for shooting ultra gorgeous models, especially women with voluptuous gifts is renown. He also has a penchant for models with large areola (puffy nipples) and his growing legion of fans who appreciate this rare and aesthetic quality are becoming increasingly devoted to his particular vision of female beauty.

The title here is a bit misleading - Dowson's subjects are not the typical runway model, tall and wispy, but are more typical of glamour models. An he seems to pick from the the top 1% of this category. The girls are incredibly beautiful. Goliath Books has published a magnificent collection of Dowson's nudes here, and although there will be work that many have seen before, there is enough to win a new legion of fans, and keep the diehards happy too.

Dr. Vinod B. Damodaran is a biomaterials researcher at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials (NJCBM) and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. His current research focuses on the development of innovative biomaterials for various biomedical applications, including brain-computer interface (BCI) and fused deposition modeling.

Dr. Divya Bhatnagar, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at New Jersey Center for Biomaterials, Rutgers University, has authored several peer-reviewed publications on both in vivo and in vitro aspects of tissue engineering. Her current research focus is on developing medical devices and bioactive materials for long-gap nerve repair and other tissue engineering applications.

Prof. Murthy is an Associate Research Professor affiliated with the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. His research spans a range of activities from understanding the properties and performance of polymers to the use of these polymers in biomedical devices.

Grade 3-6-Zorba is a noble, big, black cat from the port of Hamburg who keeps his vow to a dying seagull who was tragically caught in an oil slick. He promises to watch over her egg, not to eat the chick when it hatches, and to teach the baby gull to fly. With the aid of four loyal feline friends, he hatches the egg and the young female that emerges immediately calls him "Mommy." Having fulfilled two of the promises, Zorba and his mates must not only teach her to fly, but also give her the strength to leave those she loves to realize her true nature. Zorba breaks the taboo and speaks to a human poet, who carries the young gull and her beloved foster father to a church tower where Lucky naturally, gracefully takes flight. This intelligent, eloquently translated work examines loyalty, trust, and acceptance of differences. It truthfully displays environmental destruction caused by humans and the animals note that, "Humans, unfortunately, are unpredictable. So says the wise cat, Colonel, in Sepulveda's charming tale of devotion, courage and the importance of keeping one's word. A man-made disaster indeed gets the story started: a female gull becomes mired in an enormous oil slick and expends all of her remaining energy in a final flight to safety. She lands on the balcony of an apartment building, where she meets the fat black cat Zorba and extracts a threefold promise from him: that he will not eat the egg she is about to lay, that he will look after it and, once it is hatched, that he will teach the fledgling how to fly. Zorba enlists the help of his good and noble friends ("He gave his word of honor, and the word of one cat of the port is the word of all the cats of the port," says Colonel). Each is endearing and distinctive, from the sage but stammering Colonel to the hilariously forthright Secretario to the encyclopedia-consulting Einstein. With shades of the friendship between a spider named Charlotte and a pig named Wilbur, the relationship between Zorba and Lucky (the name the feline gives the baby gull) explores fundamental questions of life and death, and following one's calling. Sepulveda also fills the brief chapters with memorable everyday moments: the busy Italian restaurant that serves the cats around the back (but only with a reservation), the catalogue of wonders cached in the house of Harry, a human friend to the cats. The language throughout, translated by Peden, is a marvel of economy and warmth, and Sheban's delicate charcoal and pastel illustrations heighten the sense of magic (particularly a wordless spread of Lucky taking flight over Hamburg by night). A Great Story of Courage in the Face of Environmental Disaster and an Excellent Translation

This book is a great read for all ages, and it is appropriate for children 7 to 12. The summary provided by Amazon is correct. The only thing I have to add that it is a story of great feeling, and from an academic standpoint, it is useful to develop language art skills and language learning skills. I think it is best read if read aloud. If I had children, I would read them this book at night.

This book is on my favorite book shelf for this month at the bookstore in which I work.
My son reads to his daughter and I suggested this book. Both parent and child can appreciate this charming story and the clever way in which it is told. Very clever plot. I would have never guessed at the solution to the problem.

William Terry Couch (1901-1988) began his four-decade publishing career building the University of North Carolina Press into one of the nation's leading university presses. His editorial attacks on the social ills of the South earned him a reputation as a southern liberal. By the 1940s, his disaffection with New Deal politics turned him toward the right, resulting in his 1950 firing as director of the University of Chicago Press.

As a conservative, Couch sought books and articles that would sway general readers from what he saw as an intellectual torpor that accepted the growing role of government in American life. The liberals who controlled the presses found him dogmatic and irascible. When he tried to turn Collier's Encyclopedia into a journal of conservative opinion, he was fired as editor in chief in 1959. He ended his career as publisher for the libertarian William Volker Fund, which collapsed in the 1960s under charges of Nazism.

Couch was committed to publishing as a social cause and strove to disturb American complacency. This is the first book-length biography of Couch--a publisher who brought academic scholarship to the reading public to effect social, political and economic change.

A Fascinating Biography of a Book Publisher

William Terrence Couch is well known to students of Southern culture but almost unknown to others. Similarly, while one assumes he would be well known by historians of American conservatism for his work at the University of Chicago Press and afterwards, he is not even mentioned in the nine hundred page American Conservatism: An Encyclopedia, the extensive American Conservatism: The First Complete Guide, or The Concise Conservative Encyclopedia, whose title is misleading in its modesty. Hopefully, Shiflett’s book will make him better known to all those interested in American cultural history, particularly the book world.

Couch wanted university presses to issue books for the “general reader,” not merely a small group of scholars. Hard-headed and contentious, he battled with almost everyone throughout his long career. Moreover, at the University of North Carolina, he created enemies because of his liberalism; later, as he moved politically to the Right, he was pilloried for this at the University of Chicago Press and afterwards. He locked horns with some of the most prominent scholars and thinkers of his time, like H.W. Odum and Robert Hutchins.

Those who have worked in publishing or academia will smile knowingly at some of the institutional politics which engaged him. Those who have been politically committed will be fascinated by his intellectual battles in that area.

Shiflett’s scholarship is impeccable. Based on an enormous amount of work with published material, archival manuscripts, and personal interviews, this book is extremely well written. He is fastidiously objective on controversial subjects which would have most lesser authors displaying their own views.

This is not the sole book written by Shiflett. Some years ago he wrote a highly readable work on the history of college and university libraries in the United States. It remains the best study of this important subject and I recommend it highly.

With the growth of “progressive” political invective and post-modernist babble among university-based historians, it is a pleasure to read solid works like his.

A twist on the office romance...

I LOVE office romances. There's just something so taboo about getting it on in such a non-private place. I mean, an office is a place of business, not SEXUAL BUSINESS ;) The setting, combined with the non-traditional sex between two women was enough to make me feel good in all the right places. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and there's lots of detail packed tightly into the perfect-sized read. Five stars, definitely!

Every time I read stories like these the more I want an office job and a nice romp on a desk. I have never been so worked up to go out and get a new job then after reading this story. I could picture myself at the demands of my hot, sexy female boss and I just cannot get enough of that idea. An amazing sexy story that was hard for me to put down!
