Bring your home and family life to Christ!
Catherine Doherty, foundress of Madonna House and best-selling author of the award-winning spiritual classic Poustinia, talks straight to families in this compilation by one of her spiritual sons, MH priest Fr. Blair Bernard.
Catherine first talks about Christ s hidden Nazareth years , which made up most of his earthly life, and which prepared him for the three years and three days which would change the world. She elaborates on the profound spiritual significance of these years, not only for the Lord, but for each of us and our families.
With the Nazareth years as her point of departure, Catherine discusses the ways families can connect their ordinary lives with God. For her, Nazareth is that hidden little village [where we] become whole again. As the title of this book indicates, Nazareth is a whole way of life, especially in its hiddenness. For hidden is the life that most of us live. In simple, chatty chapters, Catherine demonstrates the spiritual depth of the hidden vocation of marriage and family: to form a community of love.
The book also presents practical ways of passing on the faith, to celebrate it particularly for and with children. The unique and beautiful cycle of the church year customs celebrated in Madonna House is here adapted for use in your home. Over the years the MH community has drawn these customs from the East and the West, and from various countries; they have stood the test of time in their communication of the joys as well as the truths of our faith.
Catherine discusses of various issues in family life: teen dating, the loneliness of living a faith life in a secular world, parents as co-creators with God, various difficulties of wedded life. Catherine introduced to her community of Madonna House a Russian idea of unity called sobornost ; here she presents this idea of sobornost as a goal for family life as well. And fearlessly she addresses the end of life in the section Til Death Do Us Part , completing the cycle of a life lived in the Lord.
Nazareth Family Spirituality provides much food for families to digest, families whose sanctity and integrity is so questioned in our day and age. It also gives much encouragement to live a life of faith in our modern world.

Review
In this book, we find a collection of Gospel reflections, some never before published, as well as liturgical customs and traditions to help bring Nazareth alive in Catholic families and homes.
The friendly, conversational tone of the book draws you in to experience the heart of Nazareth, and it gives you the feeling that Catherine is alongside you offering encouragement and love.
Nazareth is a place where growth in holiness and love of God through ordinary everyday life can happen, as Catherine connects the various aspects of Nazareth to modern Catholic family life. Her winsome way of putting things even deep spiritual truths gives great encouragement.
These reflections can be an inspiration to young couples as well as to those who have been married for many years. This book can also be a resource for study, individually or in a group.
The traditions from Madonna House are presented in such a way that they can be easily adapted to Catholic homes. Through such things as food and decorations, these customs bring to life the richness of the faith.
This book is a treasury of love, wisdom and celebration from the heart of Catherine Doherty. It is a treasury that presents a way of passing on the faith that is accessible and vibrant. Through it, families can find healing and joy. --Sue Atkinson
About the Author
Asked once for the essence of her spiritual life, Catherine answered, Always to do the will of God as revealed by people and circumstances. After much suffering, struggle and surrender through these people and circumstances , Catherine became what her Russian forebears would call a staritza, a Spirit-filled teacher and guide of the interior life. People were attracted to her as someone who radiated a palpable knowledge of God and His love that did not come from books, but rather from her own experience.
Catherine was born in 1896 to Theodore and Emma, members of the minor Russian nobility, and the Orthodox Church. Catherine married Boris de Hueck at 15, and soon they both were caught up in World War I, where they served as nurse and engineer. Before the war was over, the Bolsheviks had come to power in Russia, and as hated members of the aristocracy, Catherine and Boris had to escape, first to Finland, then to England where Catherine became a Roman Catholic and finally to Canada, where their son George was born.
With her husband unable to support the family, for some years Catherine found herself working at various menial jobs through which she experienced the grinding poverty of the working poor.
Then through a providential series of circumstances, she worked in the Chautauqua, telling stories of her life in Russia throughout the U.S. and Canada. As a speaker, she mesmerized her audiences, and became wealthy again. She eventually became an executive and traveled widely to meet leading celebrities of the early twentieth-century, such as G.K. Chesterton and George Bernard Shaw.
But she found herself haunted by the words in the Gospel, Go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor... and come, follow me (Mk 10:21). With the blessing and help of Toronto s Archbishop, during the Great Depression she opened a street-front soup kitchen and meeting place she named Friendship House .
Falsely accused of being a communist, she had to close Friendship House. But in 1938, she began anew in Harlem, New York, serving the blacks who lived there. Through her work, and lectures throughout the country, Catherine pioneered in racial justice before it was fashionable or safe to do so.
Catherine's vision grew, and she saw the work in racial justice as only one of many others open to the laity there were no restrictions. But members at that time wanted to concentrate on racial justice and outvoted Catherine. She then moved to Combermere, Canada, in 1947 and began a work she named Madonna House. She had married again in 1943, to Eddie Doherty, a famous newspaper reporter.
In Combermere, people came to join her work, and eventually Madonna House became a community of lay men, lay women, and priests living promises of poverty, chastity, and obedience, engaged in a variety of spiritual and corporal works. (Catherine and Eddie took the same promises, and from that time lived apart. Catherine said it made them even more one.) Such a group was unheard of at the time, and foreshadowed the new ecclesial communities of the 21st century Catholic Church. Madonna House continues in Combermere, its headquarters, and in houses throughout the world.
Catherine experienced some of the major events of the 20th century, including two World Wars and the Russian Revolution. She knew wealth and poverty; she knew rejection and loneliness. She knew the pain of an abusive husband, lived as a single mother, and then found happiness in her second marriage, even after the promise of celibacy. She welcomed the changes in the Catholic Church while staying faithful to it; and she shared the treasures of her Russian spirituality. Catherine led a most extraordinary life, written up in a number of biographies.
She died at 89 on December 14, 1985. Her cause for canonization has been introduced, and she can be called "Servant of God".
